Japan is a geographically unique country with many natural landmarks to explore. You can find tropical beaches, snow capped mountains, lush forests, vast waterfalls, and volcanic peaks in Japan. Japan is located on the Pacific ring of fire where thousands of natural hot springs live. These landmarks are not just geographical features, but are also deeply woven into the country's values and cultural heritage. Beautiful natural landmarks are tied to Shinto Buddhist views. Influence in Japan's natural landmarks is found in Shinto as they believe spirits and ancestors inhabit natural landmarks such as mountains and waterfalls. Japanese culture has a deep appreciation for nature and views society as being in harmony with nature.

Natural Hot Springs (Onsen)

Natural hot springs or “onsen” are numerous across Japan because this country is geographically placed on the pacific ring of fire. Japan is an archipelago, located on a volcanic belt with hundreds of active volcanoes. These plates beneath the ground store energy and cause tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes . The constant volcanic activity heats groundwater. This is also what leads to geothermal vessels that produce natural hot springs for people to enjoy. The practice of bathing in hot springs began during the Edo period in the 1600s. People bathe in these hot springs for healing and relaxation purposes. Japan now has many hot spring resorts that have become a popular destination for tourists exploring Japan. These resorts often offer people hospitality, peaceful nature, traditional architecture and cuisine. Before bathing in an onsen people must wash off to keep the natural hot springs clean. Exploring these hot springs is a great way to learn about Japanese culture and their natural landmarks.

Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is a very significant natural landmark that acts as an iconic symbol for Japan. Mount Fuji is a volcano and the tallest peak in all of Japan. People travel all across the world to catch a glimpse of this gorgeous mountain. Mount Fuji is considered a site of spiritual importance that people worship in Japanese culture (what fuji). People have considered this mountain sacred for centuries. Clouds and poor visibility make it difficult to view Mount Fuji and visibility tends to be better during colder months. There are lakes and hot spring resorts that surround this area making it a very peaceful destination for visitors. Cherry blossom season around Mount Fuji is another beautiful sight to see. During the end of March through April in the Fuji Five Lakes region is the best area to view the blooming cherry blossoms with Mount Fuji in the background.
